WWTX sinbad exclusive by ToolKitten WWTX sinbad exclusive by ToolKitten
well the only reason i'm attempting to post this right now, right after i finished it, is eric posted it, and now i can get away with it!

hah, well letsee..

this cover was kinda irresistible to start tonight, i was going to have it flatted and just flat half myself, color half. thats not what happened, i just ended up flatting the whole damn thing, took about 3 hours to flat, then i colored it after, that took 4 and a half hours. now you guys know why i pay somebody else to do my flats, it saves so much time!

it was interesting to have so much detail to consider, these sinbad covers really are just an excuse to go NUTS for both the penciller and the colorist, because arabian style is just so gaudy.

anyways, my favorite parts ended up being that vase on the right, both for shine and smoke.

this whole thing was really difficult for me, i kept second guessing myself because her hair had to be red, and i always use so much red on sinbad covers, i kept having to dull down the other reds a tad so she popped more, especially where the lanterns were concerned. i really REALLY wanted to make it a bit darker, like the sun had just set and the main light being those lanterns casting everything in a soft orange glow, but i had to keep it light per eric's request. i just enjoy coloring darker scenes more, shame thats not anybody's favorite from me.

but yeah, i guess even trying to blab i couldn't go on as much as eric just did. you can view the lines in his gallery if you're curious.

colors me, Nei Ruffino

hahah Yep, flatting can take longer than the actual color work. I wish I could afford to hire a flatter. I recently did a test page for Jamie Tyndall and the flats took me longer than the coloring. It took nearly all day just to flat. oy! lol

I know this is old, but it's still a great image! Your work is awesome, Nei! I'm so jealous you get to team up with so many of my favorite artists! Ebas is such an inspiration!

the smoke effect kinda jarrs slightly with the rest of it, kinda like someone added Poser models to a photograph. otherwise, brilliant combination of inking and coloring. i love the gold details too!! plus her expression just speaks volumes. i doubt you even need a masthead for this issue :)

The vase is nice indeed. Wonderful job on the smoke effect.

There is so much detail, it is hard to focus on just one thing. It gives the mind something to ponder, and it's a bit like a treasure hunt as you discover something new each time you look at it.

May I ask - did you use the dodge/burn tool to get the skin gradient? Because it's so vivid. (and I know that the 'highlight' / 'shadow' setting for each gives a different result) Or somehow use a gradient overlay?

If you're able to tell me, I'd really appreciate it. :)
ToolKitten Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2008  Professional General Artist
i do not EVER use the dodge and burn tools to shade, i pick my own colors. those tools are an awful way to try to color.
dazza1008 Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2008
No wonder your colouring is so vivid (and unique). XD Thank you for the tip!

if you have Photoshop, try using biiiig brushes with low flow :) If you don't have photoshop, you can download a trial from ^_^ it's valid for 30 days and you can see if you can purchase it later if you really like it :3 If you can't afford it *i think it's a couple hundred US not sure atm* Other great graphics programs such as the GIMP, sai, Opencanvas and Corel Painter are available, but PS is for people more serious into ... say for example ALL artforms, you know? :) it's what professionals use because of its versatility. ^_^
